Android 16 update failure: gestures on some Pixel phones fail on a large scale

The official version of Android 16 pushed by Google last week caused core interaction failures on some Pixel phones, and a large number of users reported serious failures in navigation gestures and interface operations. According to feedback from the user community, the return gesture is slow to respond and takes several seconds to complete, or even fails completely; the swipe up gesture is unresponsive on the Pixel 9 Pro XL, the Pixel 8 physical button loses its function, and the Pixel 6 series is even more paralyzed by multiple gestures. The screen recording published by Android Police editor Artem Russakovskii on the social platform shows that the return operation is only intermittently effective, which directly exposes the interaction defects at the system level.

What is troubling is that this failure shows obvious device differences. Despite a large number of complaints on Reddit and X platforms, some Pixel 9 users did not encounter similar problems after upgrading, and this instability has increased the difficulty of troubleshooting. Because gesture operations run through the entire system, the failure has directly affected daily high-frequency operations such as application switching and message replies, causing substantial damage to the basic experience of mobile phones.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Google has encountered a system update accident. In Android 16 Beta 4.1 released in May this year, the official had fixed the abnormal tactile feedback problem, but before the official version was pushed, the version notes released on June 11 did not mention the fix for the navigation module. As of press time, Google has not yet made an official statement on the gesture failure, and users need to submit error reports through official channels. Considering that the failure affects multiple generations of flagship models and involves core functions, the industry expects Google to urgently launch a hot fix patch.
